NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: TROY PULLS AWAY FROM ATHENS IN FOURTH (2025-02-06)
Northern Tier Sports ReportATHENS — Troy held off a spirited Athens squad, winning 50-39 during NTL girls’ hoops action Thursday.
The Trojans took a 16-10 first quarter lead but the Wildcats kept it close the next two quarters, as Troy led just 38-32 going into the final frame. In the fourth they held Athens to just seven points to secure the win.
“I’m really proud of our girls effort and resilience tonight,” said Troy coach Curtis Miller. “I thought we played hard and fought for all four quarters. Athens did a great job on both ends of the court and forced us into some tough situations. Their coaches had their players prepared and they did a great job of getting to the basket and hitting some outside shots. They created some adversity for us throughout the entire game, and I think overall we responded well to that. We didn’t play our best game but I told the girls afterwards that sometimes it’s important to play in scrappy games like that where you need to dig in and find a way to win. It was a physical hard fought NTL game and I’m glad our girls were able to come out on top.”
The Trojans had eight 3-balls in the contest, with Alyssa Parks hitting two of them en route to leading Troy in points with 16.
Kailyn Sterling added 15, as Giana Renzi had three 3-balls for nine points. Gloria Andrews scored six, with Madelyn Seeley, and Kyah Renzo both scoring two.
Allison Kemp, and Addy Wheeler had 11 points each to lead the Wildcats.
Parks started strong with eight first quarter points as the Trojans jumped out to the 6-point lead. Troy would hit three 3-pointers in the second, but just out scored Athens 13-12 to take a 29-22 advantage into the locker rooms.
In the third Athens out scored Troy 10-9 as they hit two 3-pointers to make it a 6-point game.
The Trojans hit two 3-pointers in the fourth, with Sterling scoring five points to help Troy pull away.
Troy (16-4) will host Jersey Shore on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. start.
