COLLEGE: CANTON GRAD WARD TAKES FIFTH AT INVITE, TROY GRAD SEYMOUR SUFFERS LOSS (2025-02-23)

Hudson Ward and some of his Lock Haven teammates headed south to the Patriot Open Last Chance Qualifier at George Mason University.
Wrestling at 157 ponds and in Pool B, Ward would start off in the quarter-finals, facing Gavin O’Neil Cagle of Virginia. In the first period, Ward would be called for stalling twice to make the score 1-0 after one period. In the second period, Cagle would choose the bottom position and earn the one-point escape to make the score 2-0 after two periods. In the third period, Ward decides to start in the neutral position. Cagle would be called for stalling twice to give one point to make the score 2-1. Ward would lose his match by a final of a 2-1 decision.
Dropping to the consi round of 4, Ward would face off against Gannon Jaquay of Edinboro unattached. Ward scored the first takedown to take the 3-0 lead. An escape by Jaquay cut the lead to 3-1 before Ward scored another three-point takedown to end the first period with a 6-1 lead. In the second period, Jaquay started in the bottom position and earned the one-point escape to make the score 6-2. Another takedown by Ward to add to his lead to make it 9-2. Another escape by Jaquay made the score 9-3 before Ward would secure another takedown to make it 12-3. Jaquay earned another escape to make the score 12-4 before Ward would end the period with his fifth takedown to end the second period with a 15-4 lead. Ward chose neutral in the third and would score two more takedowns while giving up one escape to win by technical fall 21-5 in 5:39.
In the fifth-place match, Ward would see Seth Weaver of Franklin and Marshall unattached. In the first period, Ward would score the first takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the second period. Weaver chooses the neutral position. Another takedown by Ward to make the score 6-0. An escape by Weaver made the score 6-1. Another takedown by Ward made the score 9-1. Weaver would earn another escape point, making the score 9-2, before Ward would secure another takedown and an escape by Weaver at the end of the second period, making the score 12-3. In the third period, Ward chose the neutral position. A stall warning was given to Weaver before Ward could secure one more takedown to make the score 15-3. An escape by Weaver made the score 15-4. In the end, Ward would earn one more point by virtue of having over one minute of ride time to make the final score a 16-4 major decision for Ward.
Ward would finish his day 2-1 and earned himself a fifth-place finish at the Patriot Open.
In the last dual of the season Lehigh University hosted Arizona St Friday night. With this meeting it would mean Sheldon Seymour intermat #10 would face off against the reigning national champion and intermat #2 Richard Figueroa.
With the dual starting at 157 pounds, Lehigh started off with a bang. Lehigh would win the first 6 bouts to go up 25-0 going into the 125-pound bout with Seymour and Figueroa. Figueroa would get the first takedown to take the 3-0 lead before Seymour would earn the one-point escape to make it 3-1. Figueroa chose the down position to start the second period. Seymour would give up the one-point escape to make the score 4-1. Scoring a second takedown for Figueroa to take the 6-1 lead. Seymour would earn another point by way of an unsportsmanlike conduct on Figueroa by him slamming down on Seymour’s knee multiple times. Seymour would earn one more escape to make the score going into the third period 7-3. In the third period Seymour would choose the down position. Unable to escape from bottom the final score would be a 8-3 decision loss for Seymour.
Lehigh University would win the dual 25-11 to finish 7-4 for the regular season. Arizona State would lose one team point for a coach’s misconduct. Now time for Seymour and his teammates to heal up and get ready for EIWA Conference tournament and qualify for the NCAA tournament.
