THE WEEK AHEAD: STATE WRESTLING TAKES CENTER STAGE, WHILE FOUR TEAMS ALIVE IN STATE HOOPS (March 3, 2025)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It’s on to states for anybody who is left. There are seven area wrestlers moving on to Hershey, while on the courts, four area hoops teams are still going.

WRESTLING

Thursday, March 6 - Saturday, March 8

PIAA Championships at Hershey Giant Center: It’s Christmas for wrestling fans this week. Towanda has Mason Higley, Sawyer Robinson, Gage Evans, and Riley Vanderpool, Wyalusing has Ayden Hunsinger, Canton has Lyle Vermilya, and Troy has Reed Palmer all in the boys’ tournament, while for the girls NEB has Anaiah Kolesar, while Towanda has Lillie Maynard. Class AA boys start at 9 a.m. on Thursday, and will wrestle three rounds, while girls start at 2 p.m. and will wrestle two. On Friday AA starts at 8 a.m., and will wrestle three rounds, including the blood round, followed by girls at 11:45 a.m., with their two rounds, including the blood round. That evening the semifinals for all both will be at 7 p.m. followed by another round of consolations. The final round of consolations are at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the placer matches at 11:30 a.m. The finals will be at 4 p.m. 


GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Friday, March 7

Towanda (16-10) at River Valley (25-1), 6 p.m.: A long trip down to the District VI runners-up for the Knights. This is their first state game in three seasons.


Canton (17-9) at Mountain View (21-4), 6:30 p.m.: The Warriors travel across two counties for this state contest. Mountain View defeated Elk Lake in the District II final after losing to them twice in the regular season. Get there early to get a seat.


NEB (20-7) at Williams Valley (22-3), 7 p.m.: The Panthers head south to take on the District XI Champions, who beat Marian Catholic in the title game.


BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Saturday, March 8

Holy Cross (22-4) at Troy (24-2), 4 p.m.: The Trojans will be looking for their first state win in some time, having gone 0-3 over the past three seasons. Holy Cross are the District II runners-up, losing to Riverside.
