NTL WRESTLING: AREA WRESTLING GEARING UP FOR SLIGHTLY ALTERED PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (2025-03-05)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The PIAA Wrestling Championships start Thursday and will run through Saturday with plenty of local faces, and a slightly altered schedule.

For the boys Towanda leads the way with Gage Evans (133), Riley Vanderpool (145), Sawyer Robinson (215), and Mason Higley (285). Robinson is a returning state medalist, while Higley is a 3-time state qualifier. 


This is Vanderpool’s second year at states, while Evans is just the second Knight to qualify for states as a freshman.


Also in the bracket are Wyalusing’s Ayden Hunsinger (152), Troy’s Reed Palmer (285), Canton’s Lyle Vermilya (114), and Sullivan County’s Colton Wade (127).


Wade is a 2-time state medalist, while Hunsinger and Vermilya are returning to Hershey. This is Palmer’s first trip to states.


Out west NPL’s Bryce Pequignot (114) and Brayden Pequignot (127) are returning to states, while Williamson’s Luke Sottolano (285), and Zander Wilson (107) are making their first trips.


On the girls’ side NEB’s Anaiah Kolesar (124) is a returning state qualifier, while Towanda’s Lillie Maynard (106) is making her first trip to Hershey.


Athens has five, with Emma Renninger (112), Hannah Rathbun (130), Abigail Wagner (170), and Leah Nason (235) returning to Hershey. Joyce Clink (124) is making her Hershey debut.


As for the time schedule, the AA boys’ open things on Thursday at 9 a.m. with preliminaries, followed by the first round. The first round of consolations will follow at 12:30 p.m.


The girls’ first round will be at 2 p.m., followed by the consolations at 3:30 p.m.


On Friday the AA quarterfinals are early, starting at 8 a.m., along with the second round of consolations. The blood round is set for 10:30 a.m.


The girls’ quarterfinals are at 11:45 a.m., with their blood round slated to go off at 1:15 p.m.


Both will return at nine for the semifinals at 7 p.m. That will be followed by a round of consolations slated to go off at 9 p.m.


Saturday opened with a final round of consolations at 9:30 a.m., followed by the third, fifth, and seventh place bouts, beginning at 11:30 a.m.


Everything rounds out with the finals at 4 p.m.
