NTL WRESTLING: CANTON'S VERMILYA GOES 1-1 FIRST DAY TO STAY ALIVE (2025-03-06)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportHERSHEY — Canton’s Lyle Vermilya opened the tournament with a big major decision win, before falling in the opening round to go 1-1 on the day, and make it through to Friday.
“It feels really nice,” Vermilya said about coming down and getting a win off the bat. “There’s definitely going to be more matches, so you always have to be ready for the next one. It feels good to get the first one out of the way, it gives you a little bit more confidence.”
Vermilya (114) won 14-0 over McGuffey’s Clayton Ealy in the preliminaries, but then fell to Grove City’s Ian Stearns, 15-3.
Vermilya opened his first match with a takedown to go up 3-0 in the first.
“It definitely set the tone a little bit on my feet,” he said. “It gave me more confidence on my feet.”
The second period matched the first, with Vermilya getting a takedown, and riding out Ealy for a 6-0 lead.
Then, in the third, Vermilya was on top and scored two sets of back points for the 14-0 major.
“Every match is going to be different, but it shows what you’ve been working on, and practicing will work out for you,” Vermilya said about his strong rides. “You just have to make sure you get set up right.”
In his first round match Stearns led 6-1 after one, and 12-3 after two. He got a third period takedown for the 15-3 win.
In the second round of consolations he’ll face Chestnut Ridge’s Easton Mull on Friday morning.
