NTL GIRLS' WRESTLING: TOWANDA HAS STRONG FIRST SEASON ON THE MATS (2025-03-14)
Northern Tier Sports ReportIt was a historic first season for the Towanda girls’ wrestling team, as they went 8-2 in their first season with a program, while sending a wrestler to the PIAA Girls’ Wrestling Championships.
“A historic season for the first ever Towanda girls’ wrestling team,” said Towanda Brock Nichols. “I’m so proud of them. A lot of them new to the sport, to come out, and battle every day in practice, and put their hard work on show at every event. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to get this program up and running with. Being as young as we were, to go out and compete as well as we did, I’m excited for the future.”
They opened the dual meet season with wins over Milton (54-16), and Central Columbia (54-21), while losing a tough match with eventual state champions, Montgomery (45-30).
At their first home match they beat Mifflinburg (39-36), and Western Wayne (39-33), but fell to Athens (51-24).
They would end the year with four straight wins: Wellsboro (54-18), Mifflinburg (42-30), Jersey Shore (39-24), and Central Columbia (33-27).
At the District IV Tournament they had five place finishers: Lillie Maynard (106), JC Allis (118), Lylah Bride (148), Elizabeth Naughton (170), and Shaylynn Morris (235).
Out of those five at regionals Maynard made it to the state tournament for their first ever PIAA qualifier.
Going forward the Knights say good-bye to Maynard, and Morris, but return three other medalists from the district teams, along with several newcomers rising through the ranks, meaning the girls are here to stay on the mat.
