Northern Tier Sports ReportCANTON — Canton softball dug themselves too deep a hole as they fell to Sayre, 16-11, during opening day in NTL action Tuesday.
Sayre opened up a 15-1 lead midway through the third. Canton would out score them 10-1 the rest of the way, and had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t get that one hit to get all the way back.
Tara Gilbert (1-for-5) had a home run, with 2-RBI, and a run scored, as Jaylee Ward (3-for-3) had two doubles, two runs scored, and 2-RBI.
Charleigh Anderson (3-for-3) was perfect from the plate, doubling, scoring twice while driving in a run, as Nevaeh Vroman (1-for-5) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI.
Addi Pepper (1-for-2) scored twice, with Alyssa May, and Trinity Acla both crossing home. Tiffany Acla added an RBI.
Gilbert went the distance in the loss, striking out seven with eight walks, 10 hits, and nine earned runs out of the 16.
Sayre led 5-0 in the bottom of the second when Canton got on the scoreboard when Pepper stole home.
After a 10-run top third from Sayre the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Anderson scored on a Vroman double, followed by Ward scoring on an error off the bat of May.
Two batters later Vroman scored off Tiffany Acla’s RBI ground out for a 15-4 score.
Sayre made it 16-4 in the top of the fourth, but after that it was all Canton. Anderson would double in Trinity Acla, then scored on a Ward double.
After an out Gilbert hit a 2-run bomb for a 16-8 score. Canton got two more runs as May and Pepper would score on errors for a 16-10 game.
Canton’s final run came in the fifth when Anderson scored off a War double.
In the bottom of the seventh they had bases loaded with one out but Sayre got out of the jam with a double play to secure the win.
