NTL TRACK & FIELD: WITH RETURNING HIGH JUMP D4 CHAMP WYALUSING HAS HIGH HOPES FOR 2025 (2025-03-24)

Wyalusing track and field will look a little different this year with female, 4-year stalwart Olivia Haley having graduated, but long time coach Jim Schools believes there’s plenty left to carry the program forward.

“It’s exciting to get back out here once practices got started, and the fact that we had some decent weather the first couple of weeks,” he said. “One you get out here, and get going, it was easy to get excited again.”

On the boys’ side they return defending district high jump champion Dylan Johns.

“He’s been working pretty good here in the first part of the season,” Schools said. “We did some full jumping, and he did pretty good with that, so he’s getting there.”

The junior is excited to defend his title this season, and do even better at states.

“We put the bar up early this season, and I’m jumping really good so far, so I’ve got high hopes,” Johns said. “I’ve got a lot of pressure on me, and good competition, so I’ve got to hold my spot.”

His goal is the school record, and a state title as he hopes to get up to 6-feet, 7-inches.

“I’m working on my form up top, and just getting over the bar,” he said.

Johns will also being doing the javelin, and 4x100, so he’s going to be all over the place.

“It can be chaotic sometimes, but I like it a lot,” he said.

Schools sees several others standing out on the boys’ side, too.

“Trennan Tewksbury in the distance is somebody that’s going to out there,” he said. “He’s going to be competitive with most of the kids in the league. He worked really hard this winter, and he ran some really good indoor times in both the mile, and the 2-mile. James Rogan is a hard worker in the hurdles. He’s been doing a lot of hard work with that, and looking better. Zibiah Walton is another kid in the jumps, he did a lot of stuff in the off season to get himself ready.”

For the girls it will be a changing of the guard, with distance runner Megan King leading the way.

“I’m focusing mostly running as a team and competing as a team,” she said.

King was a medalist in the 2-mile at the District IV, Class AA Championships two years ago, while also being a big part of their 4x800 relay, which is her favorite event.

“I just love that relay,” King said. “The open 800, I don’t really like.”

As for the 2-mile, she’s hoping to get into the lower 12-minutes, and get back to under six minutes in the mile.

“I’m going to be trying to work on my speed this year, and getting a better stride,” she said.

Schools is looking for several other girls to step up, as well, including Vayda Rought, and Carol Scarborough.

“We’ve got a group of young sprinters that should come around,” he said. “It’d be great to see how they are going to do without the shadow of Olivia, and these sprinters are on the soccer team, also.”

Schools believes he has plenty of scorers on the team in several events.

“We’ve got some decent jumpers, we didn’t lose anybody from our jump crew from last year,” he said. “In the distance we’ve got Megan King, Riley Porter, and Camryn Gesford, they’ve working working pretty good. They did a bunch of stuff in the winter, so they’re ready to go.”
