NTL BOYS' TENNIS: MCCARTER'S WIN PUSHES TOWANDA PAST GALETON (2025-03-27)

Northern Tier Sports Report
TOWANDA — A key 3-set win from Matrix McCarter propelled Towanda to a 3-2 win over Galeton in non-league boys’ tennis action Thursday.

“It came down to the wire,” Towanda head coach Sabrina Taylor said. “It was 2-2 and we needed our third singles [Matrix McCarter] to pull through. And he did it for us. He lost the first set, but he came back to win the second set, and then the third set, and it gave Towanda the victory.”

The Knights swept the singles with Bayley Poll winning 6-0, 6-0 over Corbin Basile at first singles, and Rian Hennessy winning 6-1, 6-1 over Gavin Shutt at second singles.

“It doesn't seem to matter how tough the opponents are,” Taylor said about Poll. “So far, he’s won all of his matches rather easily. We've got some tough competition coming up in South Williamsport and Central Columbia, so it’ll be a good test for him.”

At third singles McCarter lost his first match 6-4 to Isaac Miller, but then rallied for back to back wins of 6-4, 6-2 to secure the match for Towanda.

“This is his [McCarter] first year playing singles,” Taylor mentioned. “He played doubles his freshman and sophomore year. And he's really blossoming as a singles player. I think the encouragement from Coach Snyder and myself was a good boost.”

Galeton swept the doubles as David Martin, and Max Schloegel won over Robbie Roof, and Jameson Harkness 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, while Trey Sykora, and Wyatt Rachel beat Dominic Johnson, and Ethan Lane 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

In exhibition action the duo of Roof and Harkness fell to Luke Knisely, and Ethan Wittekind 6-4, while Towanda’s two-some of Poll, and Hennessy beat Basile, and Shutt 6-4.

Towanda (2-1) will travel to CV on Monday with a 4 p.m. start.
