NTL BASEBALL: TOWANDA FALLS AT WELLSBORO (2025-03-27)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWELLSBORO — A 5-run third inning doomed Towanda as they fell to Wellsboro, 9-5, during NTL baseball action Thursday.
Towanda led 4-1 in the middle of the third before the Hornets rallied. Wellsboro tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead.
The Knights got one back in the fifth, then Wellsboro scored the final run in the sixth.
Jack Wheaton (2-for-3) scored twice, and drove in a run, as Dawson Butts (2-for-4) had an RBI.
Jack Tavani (1-for-4) hit a triple, Gianni Assante (1-for-4) had a double, with both scoring, and driving in a run.
Wil Shrawder (1-for-4) drove in a run, as Boom Thompson (1-for-2) scored.
Butts started, going three innings with one strikeout, five walks, four hits, and six runs, three of which were earned.
Assante went the final three innings, striking out five with two hits, five walks, and three earned runs.
The Hornets went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first but in the top of the third Thompson led off with a hit.
After an out Tavani tripled him in, followed by Wheaton driving in Tavani for a 2-1 lead.
Assante would double in Wheaton for a 3-1 score as Assante would find home off a Butts’ sacrifice fly.
In the bottom half Wellsboro would score five runs, three of them with two outs, to take the 6-4 lead.
After the Hornets added two more runs in the fourth Towanda would push one across in the fifth as Wheaton was hit by a pitch. He later scored on a 2-out single from Shrawder to cut it to 8-5.
Wellsboro got that one back in the sixth for the 4-run difference.
Towanda (1-2) travels to Elk Lake Saturday with an 11 a.m. start.
