NTL BASEBALL: ASSANTE LEADS TOWANDA PAST ELK LAKE (2025-03-29)
Northern Tier Sports ReportDIMOCK — In a back and forth battle Towanda held on to beat Elk Lake 9-7 during non-league baseball action Saturday.
The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but back to back three run innings saw Towanda take a 6-4 lead. Elk Lake would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game up at 6-all.
Both teams scored in the sixth, but it was the Knights out scoring Elk Lake 3-1 to take the win.
Giovanni Assante (2-for-3) had a home run, 4-RBI, and a run scored to lead Towanda as Dawson Butts (2-for-4) had a double with 3-RBI.
Jack Tavani (2-for-5) scored twice, as Jack Wheaton (1-for-1) scored three times while driving in a run.
Rylee Sluyter and Boom Thompson both scored, with Sluyter also driving in a run.
Wheaton got the start, going five innings for the win. He struck out three with one walk, eight hits, and six runs scored, three of them earned.
Tavani came on for the final two innings, striking out one with two hits, one walk, and one earned run.
Sluyter led off Towanda’s big third inning by being hit by a pitch, followed by Tavani reaching on an error. Wheaton loaded the bases after getting beaned, setting up Assante’s 2-run single.
Butts then drove in Wheaton to make it 4-3.
In the fourth Thompson reached on an error, then scored on a Sluyter sacrifice fly.
After a second out Wheaton drew a walk, then Assante hit his home run for the 6-4 Towanda lead.
Elk Lake tied it up in the fifth but the Knights would answer, as Sluyter drew a 1-out walk. Tavani then singled, setting up Wheaton’s single that scored courtesy runner Gage Evans to make it 7-6.
Assante then walked, setting up Butt’s 2-run double to make it 9-7.
Elk Lake got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but went down in order in the seventh.
Towanda (2-2) will host Troy on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
