NTL BASEBALL: TROY HANDS ATHENS FIRST LEAGUE LOSS (2025-04-24)
Northern Tier Sports ReportEAST TROY — The NTL Large School Division is a 3-team race again as Troy baseball handed Athens their first league loss, beating them 8-4 on Thursday.
“We just had to be patient and take advantage of situations when we got them,” Troy head coach Lyle Wesneski said. “They laid one on us for the first round up in Athens in early March. I told the kids, we have to come back here and respond. Here we are four weeks later, we answered back. And they're both good teams, very good teams. Hopefully, this will propel us in the next week. We got another game Saturday, and we got three more next week.”
Troy now has two league losses as they’ve split with Athens, and fell to NP-Mansfield. Athens has the loss to Troy, and the Tigers have two league losses, falling to Athens in their first meeting, and then a loss to Wellsboro on Thursday.
The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, with Athens knotting the game up at 2-2 in the top of the second.
Troy added two more runs in the bottom half for a 4-2 lead. Athens cut it to 4-3 in the top of the third, but a 2-run bottom half saw the Trojans go up 6-3.
Troy added runs in the fourth and fifth to make it an 8-3 lead. Athens got one back in the sixth, but couldn’t mount a rally in the seventh.
Lincoln Chimics (2-for-2) had a double, three runs scored, and an RBI for Troy as Joseph Frye, Evan Woodward (1-for-2), and Trey Teribury (1-for-2) all scored, and drove in a run.
Logunn Heasley and Camden Allen both scored, as Brendan Gilliland had an RBI. Jack Burbage (1-for-2) and Reed Palmer (1-for-3) each added a hit.
Palmer started, and earns the win, going 4 1/3-innings with six strikeouts, four walks, seven hits, and three runs.
Allen went 1 2/3-innings with two strikeouts, one walk, one hit, and one run. Frye tossed the final inning, striking out two.
After holding Athens in the top of the first Palmer got a 2-out single in the bottom half, with Heasley coming on to run for him.
Chimics then got a hit to right field. The ball went under the glove of the outfielder and Chimics’ legs did the rest, as he turned it into a 3-base error for a 2-0 lead.
In the second Allen and Woodward both reached, followed by Burbage drawing a walk to load the bases. Teribury then brought in Allen and Woodward for a 4-2 contest.
In the third Chimics and Frye drew back to back 1-out walks. Chimics would score on a passed ball to make it 5-3.
Woodward then drove in Frye for a 3-run lead.
In the fourth Burbage and Teribury led off with back to back hits. After an out Gilliland drove in Teribury with a sacrifice fly to put the Trojans up 7-3.
In the fifth Chimics created mayhem with his legs again, hitting a pop up to no man’s land. He took second, then made his way to third on an errant throw.
Frye would bring him in with a sacrifice fly for the 5-run lead.
Athens would add a run in the sixth for the 8-4 final.
Troy (8-4) will travel to Sullivan County on Saturday.
