THE WEEK AHEAD: NTL BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL RACES SHOULD SHARPEN, TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES GEAR UP FOR POSTSEASON, AND BOYS' TENNIS HEADS TO SINGLES (April 27, 2025)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWith just three weeks left for baseball and softball things are coming down to the nitty-gritty while track and field teams catch their breathe before the NTL Championships the second weekend in May. Towanda boys’ tennis transitions to the singles tournament this week.
BASEBALL
Tuesday, April 29
Towanda (7-5) at NP-Mansfield (9-2), 4:30 p.m.: The Knights are riding a 4-game win streak as they come into this week, just three wins away from a district berth. NPM is coming off a big loss to Wellsboro as they sit tied for second in the NTL Large School standings.
Wyalusing (3-9) at Troy (8-4), 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans are riding high after a big win over Athens last week. They have a big week this week as they look to catch the Wildcats on top of the NTL Large School standings, beginning with the Rams.
Wednesday, April 30
South Williamsport (5-6) at Wyalusing (3-9), 4:30 p.m.: A rematch of the district title game for the past two seasons as both teams battle through rebuilding years.
Thursday, May 1
Troy (8-4) at NP-Mansfield (9-2), 4:30 p.m.: The Tigers edged Troy in their last meeting at East Troy. The Trojans likely need a win here to stay in the NTL Large School race, though there is plenty of season left.
Wellsboro (4-7) at Towanda (7-5), 4:30 p.m.: The Hornets are trying to make a playoff push as they mercy ruled NPM last week. The Hornets won the first meet but Towanda comes in playing their best ball of the season.
Wyalusing (3-9) at Athens (10-2), 4:30 p.m.: The Wildcats are coming off a tough loss to Troy last week, but have a 1-game cushion for the NTL Large School title. This will be Wyalusing’s third straight game this week.
Friday, May 2
Troy (8-4) at St. John Neumann (9-2), 4:30 p.m.: Neumann comes into the week on a 5-game win streak as they challenge CV for the top spot in the District IV, Class A standings.
Saturday, May 3
Muncy (4-4) at Canton (3-8), 4:30 p.m.: Unless they sneak in a make-up this is Canton’s lone game of the week. They pretty much have to win out to sneak into the district playoffs.
SOFTBALL
Tuesday, April 29
Wyalusing (6-6) at Troy (7-4), 4:30 p.m.: A tough week for both teams last week in different ways. The Rams will be looking to break a 2-game losing streak as they head to East Troy. Troy sits in third in the district standings as they look to avoid a semifinal match-up with top seed South Williamsport.
Towanda (6-4) at NP-Liberty (8-1), 4:30 p.m.: The Knights lost a tight one to NPL in the first meeting, while both teams have plenty of postseason incentive to win this game. The Mounties are at the top of the district standings, the Knights want to make a push to get a home game.
NEB (7-5) at Canton (3-10), 4:30 p.m.: The Panthers are coming off a key win over Williamson as they are now in the thick of the NTL Small School race. The Warriors are 2-2 in their last four games.
Thursday, May 1
Troy (7-4) at NP-Liberty (8-1), 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans lost in a heartbreaker in the first outing, but have a shot at revenge this week. A win here would help them as they make a run for the second seed in the district standings.
Wyalusing (6-6) at Athens (10-0), 4:30 p.m.: The Rams get their second shot at the undefeated Wildcats. Athens won the first game 18-4, but the four runs is the most the Wildcats have given up all season.
Wellsboro (4-7) at Towanda (6-4), 4:30 p.m.: The Knights pounded their way to a 16-2 win in the first outing back in March. The Hornets are coming off a 5-3 win over CV as they make a playoff push.
Friday, May 2
Wyalusing (6-6) at Northwest (11-1), 4:30 p.m.: A good chance for the Rams to solidify their spot for the playoffs. The Rangers have won six straight coming into the week but have the worst opponent’s winning percentage in the Class AA district race.
TRACK & FIELD
Tuesday, April 29
Sayre at Towanda, 3 p.m.: The final home meet for the Knights as they welcome the Redskins.
NP-Mansfield at Troy, 4 p.m.: The Trojans will bring in NPM as they start to wind down the season.
Wyalusing at Canton, 4 p.m.: The Warriors welcome the Rams as they gear up for the postseason.
NEB at Williamson, 4 p.m.: The Panthers hit the road out west to take on the Warriors.
Friday, May 2
Troy, Wyalusing at Central Columbia Invitational: The two teams will face some competition from the south part of the districts, along with teams from District II, and District XI.
Canton at Coudersport Invitational: The Warriors head west to face some District IX competition to end the week.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Saturday, May 3
Towanda at District IV Singles Tournament (Williamsport): The Black Knights will send their two best singles players to face the best in the district.
