EAST TROY — Brendan Gilliland hit a 2-out single to drive in Evan Woodward as Troy eked out a 4-3 win over Towanda in walk-off fashion during the first round of the District IV, Class AAA baseball playoffs Saturday.

The Knights led for the first half of the game, going up 2-1 after one. Both teams scored a run in the third, then Troy tied it up in the bottom of the fourth.

After two scoreless innings the Trojans got the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Mason Smith (1-for-3) had a double with a run scored, with Logunn Heasley and Jack Burbage also crossing home.

Reed Palmer had an RBI with Lincoln Chimics (1-for-2) and Joseph Frye (1-for-3) both getting hits.

Camden Allen started and went three innings with the no decision, striking out four with four walks, two hits, and one run.

Frye tossed the final three innings to get the win, striking out four with one walk, and one hit.

Gianni Assante (2-for-4) had an RBI for Towanda as Dawson Butts (1-for-3), Boom Thompson, and Rylee Sluyter all scored. Wil Shrawder had 2-RBI on the day with Jack Tavani (1-for-3) getting a hit.

Tavani went the distance, going 6 2/3-innings with two strikeouts, six hits, one walk, and four runs.

In the top of the first Thompson reached on an error, followed by Sluyter drawing a walk. An error off the bat of Wheaton loaded the bases.

Assante would single in Thompson, then after two outs Shrawder drew a bases loaded walk to score Sluyter for the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half Smith was hit by a pitch then scored on a steal of home with two outs to make it 2-1.

Butts led off the third with a walk, followed by Tavani hitting a single. That set up Butts scoring on a Shrawder ground out to make it 3-1.

In the bottom half of the inning Teribury was hit by a pitch, then scored two batters later on a Gilliland single to make it a 1-run game again.

In the fourth Frye singled, then scored a 2-out Woodward hit to tie the game up.

In the bottom of the seventh Woodward led off with a hit. He was sacrificed over by Lucas Loxley, but Towanda got a second out.

Smith was hit by a pitch again, setting up Gilliland’s single to center field for the game winning run.

Troy advances on to face Mt. Carmel, 6-3 winners over Wellsboro, in the semifinals on Wednesday at a date and time to be determined.
