NTL TRACK & FIELD: TOWANDA'S FARRELL PUNCHES HIS TICKET TO STATES IN THE DISCUS (2025-05-18)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportWILLIAMSPORT — Towanda’s Varrius Farrell punched a second ticket to the PIAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday, taking second in discus during the District IV, Class AA Boys’ Championships.
“I wasn’t really expecting it but, hey, it’s good to be able to go for two events,” said Farrell, who threw 149-feet, 3-inches.
He was the second seed going in, with top two moving on, but anything can happen when it comes to throwing disc.
“I thought I had a really good shot,” remarked Farrell. “I just had to throw a good day, and have these other guys throw what they usually throw. It’s good that I threw a good day.”
Farrell just missed the state standard of 148-feet on his third throw of the day. However, when it came down to his final throw he was sitting in third place, one spot out of the automatic qualifiers, making it one of the most pressure throws he’s ever done.
“There was so much anxiety going into that throw,” Farrell explained. “Then having it all released as it released from my hands. I knew it was a good one, I’ve never had that feeling before. I was super tense.”
All season long Farrell was focusing on shot put, but now he’s got two things to work on this week.
“It’s just business as usual,” he said. “I’m going to keep practicing like how I have been, just keep working. Now it’s time to focus on these small things, and just have fun while I’m there.”
Teammate Jason Valdez (130-feet, 8-inches) just missed the district podium with a ninth place finish.
Jazick Brown (51.75) did get on the district podium by taking eighth in the 400, while he his 200 time of 23.62 was 15th.
Kole Heyer (5-feet, 7-inches) was 12th in the high jump, with Wyatt Stranger (11-feet) 18th in the pole vault.
