NTL TRACK & FIELD: WYALUSING'S JOHNS TAKES 6TH IN HIGH JUMP AT STATES (2025-05-23)

SHIPPENSBURG — A clean jump at 6-feet, 3-inches got Wyalusing’s Dylan Johns a sixth place medal in the Class AA boys’ high jump at the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday.

“It feels awesome,” said Johns. “I’ve been dreaming for two years now.”

He came in as the district champion last year but but took 11th. This year he was in a 3-way tie for district runner-up, but was the only District IV jumper to get on the state podium.

“It does feel great to beat him,” Johns about the D4 champion. “But I’m friends with all the jumpers.”

Nine jumpers ended up medaling - everybody who hit 6-feet, 3-inches - but misses came in to play as they normally do at this level.

Johns was clean at 5-10 and 6-foot, but struggles some at 6-foot, 2-inches. He missed his first two tries, but then got it on his third.

That narrowed it down to 11 jumpers, with Johns getting 6-foot, 3-inches to get him on the podium.

“It’s very important to be clean early,” said Johns. “I don’t think I would have gotten sixth if I wasn’t clean early.”

He also had some other motivation to clear 6-foot, 3-inches on his first try.

“That lady that walked in front of me kind of made me a little mad,” said Johns. “That’s probably what drove me a little bit to clear 6-3 on my first try. I was kind of like, ‘what are you doing walking in front of me during competition?’ But we held out and got 6-3. I had a good feeling I had at least eighth.”
