NTL BASEBALL: CANTON BATTLES THROUGH TOUGH 2025 SEASON (2025-05-31)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It was a tough season for Canton baseball in 2025. Injuries, particularly to their veterans, forced younger players into starting roles on varsity and took a few lumps.

They went 6-13 on the season opening with a thrilling 8-7 win over Sayre.

That was followed by a six game losing streak, ending with a win over Sullivan County (12-2).

After another loss Canton had their best stretch of the season, going 4-2 over their next six games, as they posted wins over Sayre (13-5), Muncy (9-5), Williamson (15-10), and Sugar Valley (8-7).

However, four straight losses to end the season saw their playoff push come up short.

“Our seniors went out posting some of the best numbers of their career,” said Canton coach Ben Rubert. “Zach Colton, Ben Fitch, Michael Beers all had great seasons, and Holden Ward was impactful the games he was able to play. We didn't finish with the record we desired but had some growth out of some younger players that will help us in the future.”

Zach Colton hit a team leading .431 with 17-RBI and five doubles, while Ben Fitch batted .420 with 12-RBI, 28 runs scored, eight doubles, and two home runs.

Bailey Gardner (.419) led the team in home runs with four while driving in 20 runs, and scoring a team high 31.

Michael Beers (.355) had 18-RBI, 14 runs scored, and eight doubles on the season.

With Ward out most of the year Colton got the lion’s share of time on the mound with 37 1/3-innings, striking out 34 against 18 walks.

Reed Taylor tossed the next most, 24 2/3-innings, with 16 strikeouts.

Ward managed to return for seven innings, striking  out 13 batters.

Going forward it’ll be a new look Warriors squad next season as they say good-bye to key seniors Fitch, Ward, Colton, and Beers.

“We are looking forward to bringing in a very large eighth grade class next year who had a successful junior high season,” said Rubert. “Hopefully we rebound and look to make a push into districts and compete for a small school league title again next year.”
