THE SPORTS REPORTS: ATHENS' FLYNN NAMED 'BOYS NEWCOMER OF THE SPRING;' THREE OTHER BRADFORD COUNTY BOYS ALSO EARN ALL-REGION HONORS (2025-07-23)

Athens sophomore Brady Flynn posted an impressive first varsity season at the plate and on the mound, helping the Wildcats to a big turnaround. He is The Sports Reports' All-Region "Boys Newcomer of the Spring."

Flynn was the Valley Sports Report "Baseball Player of the Year, and the "Newcomer of the Year." 

Flynn hit .442 (23 hits in 52 ABs) with seven doubles, 23 RBI, 23 runs scored, and eight stolen bases.

He walked 12 times and was hit by one pitch for a .537 on-base percentage, to go along with a .577 slugging percentage for a 1.114 OPS.

On the mound, Flynn was 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He struck out 24 and walked six, while allowing 22 hits in 21 1/3 innings. Opponents hit .256 against him.

Athens improved from 8-12 in 2024 to 15-5 this season.

Joseph Frye, senior, Troy track & field: The first year of track & field since junior high turned out to be a huge success for Frye. 

Frye was a district qualifier in the long jump, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, while helping the Trojans to another team title.

Francisco Alvarez-Sostres, Notre Dame tennis: Alvarez-Sostres was a third-place finisher at the Section IV Tennis State qualifier.

The first-singles player for Notre Dame went undefeated with a 10-0 record in the regular season. In those 10 matches, he lost just one set. At the IAC Championships at Newark Valley, he won the first-singles bracket with three match wins, and lost just two games over those three matches. 

At the Section IV West tournament at Newark Valley, he finished at the first seed in first singles after three victories. He took third at the Section IV Championships to make it to States. Overall, he finished 20-3 on the season.  

Dominic Palmer, junior, Tioga: Palmer spent the regular season running sprints, relays, and competing in the long jump and high jump, but when the postseason rolled around he focused his attention on the pentathlon.

In his first effort, Palmer won the event at the IAC Championships with 2,160 points. He followed that up with a second-place finish at the State Qualifier with a school-record 2,944 points, which easily topped the state standard of 2,901 points.

Palmer finished 12th at the State meet with 2,521 points.

Mason Brill, freshman, Wellsboro tennis: Brill was 14-1 on the year as Wellsboro’s number three player and he was 6-0 in NTL play.

John Graham, freshman, Corning baseball: A sure-gloved infielder, Graham hit .389 with a .452 on-base percentage. He led the team with four doubles, scored 12 runs, and was 13-for-13 on stolen bases. 

Felipe Silva, Notre Dame tennis: Another Notre Dame player from Spain, Silva went undefeated in the regular-season in IAC play. He won the second singles title at the IAC Championship. He finished the year 13-1. 

Taylor Freelove, Corning lacrosse: The short-stick defensive middle was the second-best clear option on the team. He created a lot of fast breaks and was a lock-down player.

Paxton Hoover, Edison baseball: Hoover was 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA on the mound. He had a .329 batting average, with four home runs, four doubles, 13 RBI, nine walks and 12 stolen bases. 

Sudan Benner, freshman, NP-Mansfield track & field: Benner earned a sixth-place medal at Districts and a second-place finish at the NTL meet in the 400-meter dash and placing fourth in the NTL in the 200-meter dash.

Griff Walter, freshman, Waverly baseball: Walter hit .302 (13 hits in 43 ABs) with 11 RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. He walked 13 times and was hit by one pitch for a .443 on-base percentage. On the mound, Walter was 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.286 WHIP. He struck out seven in 11 2/3 innings.

Josh Rought, freshman, Tioga baseball: Rought hit .306 (15 hits in 49 ABs) with four doubles, 15 RBI, 17 runs scored, and four stolen bases. He walked nine times and was hit by pitches twice for a .433 on-base percentage. On the mound, Rought was 3-2 with a 4.44 ERA. He fanned 37 and walked 14, while allowing 22 hits in 23 2/3 innings.

Jackson Varner, junior, Tioga baseball: Varner hit .343 (12 hits in 35 ABs) with one home run, nine RBI, and eight runs scored. He walked six times for a .429 on-base percentage.

Evan Woodward, senior, Troy baseball: Woodward settled in as an everyday starter for the Trojans, hitting .317 with 18 runs scored, and 17 RBI.

Gabe Cuneo, freshman, Wellsboro baseball: Cuneo hit .314 with 16 base hits, 11 RBI and 17 runs scored, while drawing 15 walks for a .464 on-base-percentage.
