NTL GIRLS' SOCCER: DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPS TROY HAVE SITES SET HIGH (2025-08-19)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportThe Troy girls’ soccer comes into 2025 as the 5-time defending league champions, and they have every intention of making it six in a row this season.
“It’s definitely tough to fill the spot every year, but we all work hard towards it,” senior Kylee Roy said about having the bullseye on their backs.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure, but we take that pressure and we turn it into working hard, and just showing everyone we can do it,” added senior Alexis McRoberts.
Coach Wayne Pratt knows that, despite their recent spate of success, every year is its own beast.
“It’s behind us at this point,” he said. “Everybody starts at 0-0 to start the season. Now, we’ve got to put our work in, and we’ve got to earn it if we want it again.”
They’re going to have to rebuild much of the defense as they lost sweeper Madi Palmer and keeper Madelyn Seeley.
“You can’t replace a Madi Palmer, the girl was just an energizer bunny for us, one of the best we’ve every had come through here,” said Pratt. “But she has trained and taught Jaylee (Ward) and Parker (Lee) back there the better points of being a defensive back. We’ve added Mallory (Chamberlain) back there, and I think we’re going to be alright.”
It’ll definitely be a new look defense but the Trojans have been known to reload back there.
“I’m kind of nervous, but I knew we can handle it,” said Ward.
They’re still as dangerous as ever up front with all-state McRoberts, and 50-goal scorer Saydi Renzo.
“It’s really nice just to know that we have that strong offensive team back,” said Renzo. “It’s nice to get new players in, but it’s definitely comfortable that we’ve got a good set up front.”
They teamed with Giana Renzi to from one of the most prolific goal scoring tandems in the league.
“They have so much experience,” Pratt said. “They’re playing almost year round, like most of the teams do anymore, and to have generals out there like McRoberts and Saydi, it allows me to sleep at night.”
Not only can McRoberts control the middle, she also has the most powerful leg in the NTL.
“We’re just working as a team, incorporating the new girls and making sure that we are as good as we can be with our touches before the season starts,” she said.
Roy will be joining her in the mid-field as the Trojans like to move players around McRoberts throughout the game.
“It’s kind of freeing because you get to go to each side,” said Roy. “You don’t really have to worry about being locked in one place.”
In league play their rival Athens is looking to get back on top, while several other teams boast a bevy of newcomers that they hope will even the odds.
“It’s exciting, I like the challenge,” Renzo said about getting other team’s best. “Any team we face we’re going to put them to the test with my team. We’re going to try our best, and go out there, and do what we can do.”
Last year they finally broke through and won a playoff game. While they’ve had some success against teams down south, it’s usually not in district play. As they try to get over that hump they’ve beefed up their schedule with games against Montoursville, Shikellamy, and Abington Heights.
“The coaches have spent some time in the off-season kind of studying what we’re very weak at once we get to those teams that can control the ball and really just dance it around us,” Pratt said. “That’s what we’re going to work on throughout the season, trying to learn not to chase the ball, but rather allow them to bring it to us, and we’re hoping that’s the magic touch.”
