NTL BASEBALL: BIG FIRST INNING GIVES ATHENS WIN OVER TROY

EAST TROY — Athens jumped out with nine runs in the first inning to top Troy 14-2 in five innings during NTL baseball action Tuesday.
The Trojans added runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, but weren’t able to get enough hits to keep the rallies going.
Caleb Binford (1-for-2), Justice Chimics (1-for-2), Evan Short (1-for-2) and Jake Dietrick (1-for-3) had the hits for the Trojans. Deitrick’s was a double, with him and Binford both scoring.
Morgan Madigan got on twice with two walks.
Shane Austin started and went two innings, allowing six hits, five walks and 10 runs. Dan Hoppaugh pitched the third, allowing two walks and two runs, but no hits.
Dietrick pitched the fourth, striking out one with two walks, two runs and no hits, with Madigan throwing the fifth, getting a strikeout.
Karter Rude was 2-for-2 with four runs to lead Athens.
On the mound Austin Lister started, and went three innings to get the win. He struck out seven while allowing but four walks.
After Athens scored nine in the top of the first, Troy did get bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning with just one out. However, Lister struck out the next two to get out of the jam.
The Wildcats added another run in the second, and two more in the third and fourth to go up 14-0.
In the bottom half of the fourth Dietrick led off with a double, then took third and home on pass balls to get Troy on the scoreboard.
In the fifth Binford led off with a single, then took second on a pass ball. After moving over to third on a groundout he scored on a pass ball for Troy’s final run.
The Trojans will travel to NEB on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
