NTL SOFTBALL: TROY FALLS TO ATHENS IN HOME OPENER (2021-03-30)
Northern Tier Sports ReportEAST TROY — A 6-run third helped propel Athens past Troy 13-0 in five innings during NTL softball action Tuesday.
The Lady Trojans had just two hits - Abigail Wrisley (1-for-2) and Hannah Darrow (1-for-2) - and even threatened in the third inning, when they had runners on first and second with no outs, but couldn’t get them across.
Tyra Williams started the game and took the loss, going two innings to strikeout three while allowing five hits, four walks and eight runs.
MaKenna Matthews pitched two scoreless innings, but was taken out in the fifth. She allowed two hits and two earned runs.
Lindsay Steele pitched the final inning, striking out two with two hits and two earned runs.
Harley Sullivan (2-for-3), Mallory Mummert (2-for-3) and Meg Collins (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games for the Wildcats. Mummert and Audrey Hatch both had home runs.
Aliyah Butler got the win for Athens, striking out seven in her shutout.
Athens scored three runs in the first inning, then made it 9-0 with six runs in the second. After being held scoreless in the third and fourth, they used two fifth inning home runs to push the advantage to 13-0.
Troy (0-2) travels to NEB on Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
