NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA LOOKS FOR FIRST WIN AS THEY TRAVEL TO WELLSBORO (2025-09-11)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportTowanda (0-3) hits the road again as they return to Tioga County for the third time in four weeks, this time to face-off at Wellsboro (1-2) with a 7 p.m. kick-off Friday.
Last week the Black Knights fell in a thriller to North Penn-Mansfield on a Panther touchdown with 23 seconds left to play.
“Although the kids were disappointed in the loss, I think they felt like they can compete,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “The have been working hard all season, and I think they are starting to see themselves really start improving.”
They take on a Wellsboro team that is coming off a close win themselves, beating Wyalusing on a fourth quarter touchdown.
“Wellsboro is an athletic team that can hurt you in a few different ways,” said Wecker. “Their backs run hard, and the QB is a threat with his arm and his legs. Good receivers, so they make the defense play honest. Defensively, they cause a lot of confusion with their different blitzes and pressures, stingy up front and athletic in the back end.”
Quarterback Griffin Morral is one of the better playmakers in the league, and he showed it in last week’s win over Wyalusing.
“I don’t think you can stop the QB, he’s a very good athlete, but what we have to do is make him earn his yards and try to keep good angles on him,” Wecker said. “If he gets free, it’s tough to catch him.”
KEYS TO THE GAMETowanda - Finish off drives. Wellsboro’s bend but don’t break defense kept the Rams at bay last week. The Black Knights will need to succeed where they failed if they’re going to get the win.
Wellsboro - Slow the option. Towanda was their best with Reese Sluyter reading the defense off the option, ending their best drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. It’ll be a different look than Wellsboro saw last week.
PLAYERS TO WATCHReese Sluyter, Towanda, QB - Sluyter showed last week what he can do with 140-yards rushing and a touchdown. They’ll need a similar performance this week to get the win.
Kody Enck, Wellsboro, WR - Enck is a big target for the Hornets, and used that size well in his touchdown catch last week.
