RUNNER'S WORLD: TOWANDA'S SISTERS ENJOYING THIS SEASON'S SUCCESS (2025-09-17)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportThe Towanda girls’ cross-country team has been rolling through the NTL this season, which is no surprise to anybody. They won the league title last year, and added one of the top freshmen in the state in Maris Cobb for the 2025 campaign, giving them high hopes for this postseason.
The close knit team is made even closer by the fact that there are two sets of sisters in the mix - Maris and Leila Cobb, and Izzy and Lila Larson.
“We all are best friends, and it’s really fun,” Lila Larson said about the atmosphere amongst the group. “I like running as a team, and we have the other two sisters, so it’s really fun.”
Despite being a freshman Lila steps into an important role as the team’s fifth and final scorer this season.
“I didn’t think that’s what was going to happen,” she said. “But it feels really good to know that I’m actually good enough to do that.”
Izzy Larson is excited to see how well her sister has done.
“At the beginning of the season she was a little nervous, and she didn’t think she’d be our fifth runner, but she’s put in a lot of effort,” Izzy said. “She just keeps continuing to get better, which we want that, and we like that.”
As for Izzy, she has has a new running partner at the top in Maris as they’ve become the top two on the team.
“It’s super exciting,” Izzy said. “We both push each other. She has so much talent, and it’s great that she displays that.”
They both did well at the Spike Shoe Invitational last week as they got a taste of some of the top teams in the state, particularly District IV foes Lewisburg and Danville.
“The competition was nice,” said Izzy. “Unfortunately, we were missing Mary-Kate, which is a big factor of our team, and with her we could have gotten more of an idea of where we need to place agains those bigger teams, because we’re looking to try to beat one of them out at districts.”
Maris had a very good day at Spiked Shoe, taking top 10 and being the top freshman.
“It felt good to finish up that high,” she remarked. “It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I can compete with those girls, and that the people behind me can on my team. It felt very accomplishing, and I’m excited to see what else I can do.”
She also enjoys spending more time with her older sister, Leila.
“We feel like it kind of makes us more bonded,” remarked Maris. “We get to go everywhere every single day after practice. It’s just nice.”
For Leila, this is just her second year running, but is glad to be part of the team success.
“I think we work off each other really well,” she said. “We just run for each other.”
And she especially likes seeing Maris have the success she’s been having.
“I love seeing her win,” said Leila. I wish her the best.”
This group would love to go to states as a team, but they’re going to have to take down one of Lewisburg or Danville come districts, which is no easy task, as both those squads were in the top three of states last year.
“It’s really going to take all of us,” Leila said. “We’re all going to have to PR, and we just have to, if we see Danville and Lewisburg ahead of us, we have to pick them off.”
