NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA PULLS AWAY TO BEAT SAYRE (2025-10-11)

TOWANDA — Reese Sluyter returned as Towanda pulled away from Sayre, 42-14, during NTL football action Friday.

“I’m really happy for the kids,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “Defensively Sayre threw maybe three or four different fronts at us so it took us a little while for the O-line to pick up on it, but I think by the end of the first quarter we started to impose our will on them a little bit. The kids played well - I thought up front we played well, I thought Reese settled in real nice for missing so much time and he got comfortable there by the second quarter. Defensively I think we controlled the game like we wanted to, a couple times they moved the ball a little bit more than we wanted but we buckled down and stopped them when we needed to.”

Sluyter ran for two scores and 69-yards on 10 carries while Tanner Vanderpool also had two touchdowns with 81-yards rushing on five carries.

Joey Montonya added 59-yards rushing and a score on five touches.

Sluyter was also 4-for-6 for 71-yards with a touchdown and a pick. Curtis Maynard had the touchdown catch.

Vanderpool opened the scoring with a 6-yard run early in the first for a 6-0 lead.

Sluyter would score on a 13-yard scamper, then hit Curtis Maynard for the 2-point conversion to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

A 27-yard scoring run from Vanderpool opened the second quarter, followed by Sluyter running one in from 10-yards out for a 28-0 lead.

With three seconds left in the half Sluyter hit Maynard for a 32-yard scoring strike, as the kick bounced off a helmet and through the uprights for the 35-0 lead at the break.

Montonya added a 25-yard run to pay dirt to start the second half for a 42-0 Black Knight lead.

Sayre got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Hudson Malanoski punched one in from a yard out, with Declan Barry running in the 2-point conversion.

With 14 seconds to play Malanoski would hit Brayden Vorhis for a 22-yard scoring strike for the 42-14 final.

Towanda will host Tunkhannock next Friday as they look to retain the T-Bone.
