NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: TOWANDA BOYS, GIRLS CLAIM TEAM TITLES AT NTLS (2025-10-12)
Northern Tier Sports ReportROME — Towanda came away with two varsity team titles at the NTL Coaches’ Invitational Saturday.
The short-handed boys’ squad pulled out a 1-point win over Troy, 85-86, while the girls cruised to a team title by 30 points.
“I’m over the moon for them, that’s awesome,” Towanda coach Mike Maurer said about the boys pulling out that win.
Top runner Boom Thompson was off qualifying for states in golf so Maurer felt they were the underdogs coming in.
“We told the guys, ‘hey, next man up,’” he remarked. “We’ve got to step up, we’ve got to put ourselves in some hurt, and I just feel awesome for them.”
Emmett Klees (17:12.2) out kicking NEB’s Jackson Martin (17:12.3) to take fifth proved to the be difference.
Hagen Jones (18:01.9) was 10th, Phillipe Spinney (18:07.4) was 12th, Jackson Frederick (18:32) came in 18th, and Nathan Little (19:45.6) finished 41st.
The Lady Knights scored 37 points, well ahead of second place NP-Mansfield (67).
“We’re at the point of our training right now we probably shouldn’t be feeling 100-percent,” said Maurer. “We’re trying to train hard, and get ready for districts, so it’s just one of those things where it’s a. Nice stepping stone for districts, and put it all out there.”
They were led by freshman Maris Cobb (19:00), who took second overall.
“I’m happy that I PRed, but I’m really disappointed I didn’t sub 19,’ she said.
She was 36 seconds behind Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek.
“It’s pretty difficult,” she said about hanging with Kosek. “She’s a good runner, and I think I let myself get too far.”
Izzy Larson (20:41.1) was fourth as Kenzi Brown (21:56.3) came in 10th.
Lila Larson (22:44.2) was 15th, with Leila Cobb (23:34) rounding out their top five in 18th.
